That’s Blackbeard in the photo. We don’t believe there were any pirates in Jonesville or Union County but we know of two sailors (said to have been brothers) that ventured this far from the sea.
One, a ship’s captain, is said to have given the community of Cross Anchor its name. The other, a ship’s purser, is said to have given the community of Cross Key’s its name.
Although the Jonesville area may have been pirate-free, Charleston, South Carolina, certainly wasn’t. Blackbeard kept ships from entering or leaving Charleston Harbor until a ransom (including medical supplies) was paid.
In addition to Blackbeard, the pirates of Charleston included many others.
